Last update:
MAKING YOUR LOCOS LOOK AND
RUN THE WAY YOU WANT
My intent for this page is to describe some projects that may be of interest.
I do not plan for it to be a blog although it may resemble one. Updates will be
made when an interesting project has been completed.
- Repair the drive in an MP 4-8-2
- The customer thought the model was built by Jerry White and somewhere along the line
the drive was damaged.
- Upgrade 3rdRail ATSF 2-10-2
- Replace the belt drive with a drive shaft directly connected to the motor,
upgrade some details and add structure to
the frame.
I work on these when I need a break from a customer project. Progress is slow.
I have too many of these but I can't resist a model I like or an interesting
challenge.
- PFM D&SL 2-6-6-0
- The drive needed a minor repair. Wipers were installed on the tender trucks. After noticing
peeling plating on the driver tires I thought it needed new tires but then saw that the underlying
tire was steel, so no need. I presume the plating was to prevent rusting. I plan to install DCC
sound and am ruminating over how to create the correct exhaust sound which would be a whoosh timed
for a 2 cylinder engine.
- Max Gray SP 2-6-0
- This is one of the batch of eight - see completed projects. I want to change the driver tire
width from ~.172" to .145". There are a couple of options after the driver centers have
been narrowed. One is to narrow the original tires and modify the flange which AFIK is not done
when converting to Proto:48
and I'm curious why - I'll try this first, if that doesn't work I'll make new tires.
- Overland RS-11
- I've always liked that loco and have two on my S scale layout; this one is O scale. Bought on eBay. Both end step platforms and steps had been damaged and poorly repaired. The nature
of the damage is such that the platform assemblies have to be removed from the model, disassembled,
straightened, reasssembled, and reattached. The halfway done
paint will be stripped. I was thinking it would be a coulda been loco on the Nevada Northern but will hold
off on that until the model is whole again. An interesting feature of the model is that the cooling
fan at the top end of the hood is powered from the drive motor so it turns when the model runs.
- PSC On3 D&RGW C-19
- This a favorite model, one of the last built in Japan. Tires are plated brass and the plating is
coming off. I'll make new tires from LedLoy steel.
- Max Gray SP TW-8
- I've always liked these too. I sold this and then bought it back. Somewhere in the middle someone
had removed several of the detail parts, cleaned up the solder, and never reattached them. I'll reassemble
it back to its original condition, possibly add or change some detail parts, and power it. I'll paint it
at the same time the SPNG #18 (below) is painted.
- Max Gray SP Narrow Gauge 4-6-0 #18
- Rumor has it that only 35 of these models were imported by Max Gray. I plan to build a U-shaped layout
running the SP NG and interchanging with O standard gauge. The loco is partially stripped and needs a new
drive which I will build. It and the above TW-8 will be painted at the same time..
- Jerry White HO Scale SP AC-9
- I want to preserve Jerry's models. This one was bought as a basket case on eBay. I'll restore it the best I can to how I think Jerry built it. More
on this model will be added to the section on Jerry White (under About Me).
